Newark

June 30, 2019 by Michelle Henry

Take a drive through downtown Newark and it’s evident to see that Newark is a city on the move. Grab a coffee at Starbucks and get your groceries a Whole Foods.  Or, grab lunch at Marcus Samuelsson’s Marcus B&P Restaurant and then head over to the New Jersey Performance Arts Center to catch a concert.  If that’s not enough, check out what’s on the schedule for cultural venues like the Newark Symphony Hall and the Newark Museum.  Not to mention, you can catch the New Jersey Devils play at the Prudential Center.  Newark is the place to be and is divided into five wards (the East, West, South, North and Central wards) and contains various neighborhoods ranging in character from bustling urban districts to quiet suburban areas.  Newark’s Branch Brook Park is the oldest county park in the United States.  One often thinks that Washington DC National Monument’s Grounds house a lot of cherry blossoms trees. However, did you know that Newark’s Branch Brook Park is home to the nation’s largest collection of cherry blossom trees, numbering well over 5,000?  That makes Newark’s Branch Brook Park a sight to behold to catch the gorgeous cherry blossom blooms in the spring.  Several Universities and Higher education institutions are also in the city, including the Newark campus of Rutgers University (which includes law and medical schools and the Rutgers Institute of Jazz Studies); the New Jersey Institute of Technology; and Seton Hall University’s law school. One can see why Newark is the most populous city in the entire state of New Jersey.  Several major companies house their headquarters in Newark: Panasonic, Prudential, PSEG, Audible.com to name a few. Newark houses one of the nation’s major airports (Newark Liberty International Airport), shipping (Port Newark-Elizabeth), and rail hubs (Newark Penn Station, 3 NJ Transit lines, Amtrak, New Jersey PATH Train and Newark Broad Street Light Rail). Newark is a significant gateway into the New York City Metropolitan area as it’s only approximately 10 miles away.
